Science night

...through the eyes of your 8th grade teacher:

bowling balls (one is my mom's old ball),

presentations, and 8th grade students.

It was a great night of people,

academics and fun. Wow! and all from science.

My hat's off to all who participated.

Immigration DBQ doc. answers.

A HUGE thank you goes out to the five people who actually continued to work outside my classroom this week and do this!! Wow! Hopefully, my questions cemented what you need to do while writing a DBQ.

Google docs for 8th

...and all others who want to improve on DBQs.

Read the post below on DBQs, and then answer the questions.

Isn't it great how you can truly learn from your classmates....if you want?

...were pretty good for a first time!

There are some really good paragraphs here. Read a few over and see what I want for next week. The first three are terrific, but I did make a suggestion on each.

On Cameron's, I want him to document each sentence where he pulls out his detail.

On Jeff's, I want a conclusion that takes us back to the topic, harsh conditions.

On Erin's, I'd like to see that phrase that transitions us to class knowledge.

The rest follow the format: topic sentence;

developing a document,

citing it at the end of the sentence,

and pulling lots of detail from the document (although almost all could use more of that);

also having class knowledge with specifics--that's one of the hardest parts.

From both class and the documents, you need to state specific facts.

A few students really pulled specifics.

The Chinese were mentioned; the 12 hour day; conditions in the tenements;

freedom from discrimination for a variety of reasons; what happened at the Triangle Fire--I was impressed.

This one has the Chinese exclusion act--wow!

But ,I also ask for more from the poster.

Be as specific as possible. And, remember to have a concluding sentence.

Next week I will take you through the outline topics and the documents for each--if you want. If you want to go on on your own, great! I will also come around and make sure my comments made sense. This first one is to be your model for the next two.

I can't wait to see how you do!

...with some good titles. I think it's cool how some people came up with some that were close to others.

May's calendar here.

3 DBQs, one poem due Wednesday and a book report. We don't have much left to do. Read the Diary of Anne Frank and The Red Pony, but really we're close to being done.

Hang in there!
